Robbie

Born in November 1924, Robbie left home in Ilford at the age of 18, to join the Women’s Land Army at a farm in Witham, North Essex.

Often working for up to 11 hours a day to help feed the nation during WWII, it was exhausting work, although Robbie loved the buzzing night life in the area due to the number of troops stationed close by and she made good friends who she would go dancing with.

One evening at a cafe, a young serviceman called Bob offered Robbie a lift back to her accommodation on his bike… Bob was to become Robbie’s husband of 64 years!

In 2008, Robbie received an award from the Prime Minister, expressing the Government’s “profound gratitude for your unsparing efforts as a loyal and devoted member of the Women’s Land Army at a time when our country depended upon you for its survival”
