Sport gives children discipline. Sport helps them to learn about teamwork; both valuing each other’s strengths and the importance of communication. And, of course, it helps keep kids moving and all the health benefits that that brings.” Steve has been an ATF coach for nearly 2 years and feels privilege to be able to share rugby and cricket skills with those who would otherwise not have had access to the game. Seeing first-hand the difference that ATF coaches can make in the local community. A RFU rugby coach at Rochford Hundred RFC since 2007. Coaching a local club team from age 7 right through to age 18. Dealing with the challenges that brings seeing boys go through adolescence, keeping them focussed, plus tactfully managing parent feedback. Steve is the Rochford Hundred Rugby Football Club (RHRFC) Schools Liaison Officer and develops and leads weekly sessions at local schools. Also leading and coaching the weekly RHRFC Little Rascals club, providing a fun experience for 2- to 6-year-olds as their first taste of rugby. Past Sporting passions were amateur boxing for Rochford ABA 15 years. At that time, it was just an idea from one man about how sport can breakdown barriers, strengthen communities and create positive futures for young people. Jo has been proud to be part of the continuing journey of ATF. Jo has worked in the voluntary sector for over 25 years, mainly in project management. She was proud to manage the recruitment, training and deployment of the Essex Ambassadors for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Since 2010 Jo has been a Member of Rochford District Council, has held several cabinet positions and also represented the council on outside bodies such as the Police, Fire & Crime Commissioner Panel. Through this civic role she has gained a good insight into the benefits that the voluntary sector can bring to the public sector, especially in the delivery of services and engagement with communities. Andy has benefited from working across different sectors within the industry, including working for one of the host Boroughs for the London 2012 Olympic games. Sport and Physical Activity has always been part of Andy’s life and not just a career choice. Andy played sport from an early age and was fortunate to play hockey for Leicestershire. In addition to playing team sports, he has taken part in numerous endurance events, including marathons, ultra marathons, ironman event and cycling from Lands’ End to John O Groats. Andy has also volunteered in his local community for many years as a sports coach in both football and Hockey, and more recently as a Park Play Leader at the Great Wakering Park Play. Andy has also volunteered as part of the Operational Team for the Ladies Hockey World Cup which was held in London. Andy believes that having opportunities to take part in sport and physical activity, as well as the wider relational benefits it brings, is key to people’s health and wellbeing. Millie is passionate about asset-based community development and previously managed Basildon Borough Council’s Communities Team, which was where she saw the power and impact ATF’s work has in the community. Continuing her career in community development, Millie currently works as a Senior Voluntary and Community Development Officer at the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, leading on external funding and capacity building in the community. He has worked as a front line housing officer and in more strategic roles as Head of a Leader of the Council's office and in a variety of corporate strategy roles. He has also worked in the Prime Minister's Office of Public Services Reform, promoting the modernisation of local government. He is passionate about maximising the life chances for all, particularly by providing good quality opportunities for those who may be more at risk. He has a good understanding of the wider political context and an excellent understanding of the importance of good governance to any organisation, including those in the third sector, with the associated risks that involves. He has been involved in a variety of sports (very averagely!) all his life and has seen the huge benefits sport and other communal activities can bring to people of all backgrounds. Brenda recalls that her brother Jimmy was blown through the window of a fish and chip shop at the corner of Pott Street (shown on the map by a star) when a V1 Flying Bomb, also known as a doodlebug landed nearby. The large circle in the top left corner of the map shows where a V1 landed, just a couple of hundred metres from Pott Street. The stay lasted two years and Violet remembers finally feeling settled and having fun making mud pies with her friend Rosemary Stovall, who lived in the same street. Violet became very fond of St Albans and revisited the town 11 years later on Sunday 20th July 1952 at the age of 18. As a family of 9, they stayed in the living room of her Father’s relative for some time and Alima expresses a feeling of being very dependent on the kindness of others. Alima’s family would eventually extend this same kindness to others who had just arrived in the UK. Alima worked very hard to rapidly learn English and within a short time, she became the family translator, which, at the age of just 7 or 8 was a huge responsibility. Mira reflects that she might make different choices now as it was such a young age to be away from home, but it did mean that she quickly developed in her abilities and independence which was a benefit. Wayne recalls one foggy Sunday morning, while walking along Whitmore Way for his 6am shift at Carreras, he was startled to hear the roars of a lion off in the distance at the Aquatels zoo… Wondering if the lion had perhaps escaped, he quickly and cautiously hurried the rest of the way to work! Robert and Jenny moved the family to rural Basildon in the late 1920s and they lived in a house called Island Queen which was on the old Rectory Road, off Cranes Farm Road. Wayne’s Mum went to Nevendon School and while the old building is still there, it has not been used as a school for many years. He recalls how he enjoyed working with a number of World War II veterans and how funny and interesting they were. The traditionally rural area of Basildon has seen huge changes since the development of the post-war New Town. The old Timberlog Lane (partly renamed to Clay Hill Road) was originally the way along which timber from the Basildon woods was carried to the wharf to be shipped to London. There were many old cinemas around when Wayne first moved from Pennsylvania to South Essex and he remembers watching films in Stanford Le Hope at The Regent Cinema.
